Nasse Wassertorten und kleine Waldfüchse

Und dann muss ich ja auch mal über den 2. Geburtstag des kleinen Mannes berichten. Es gab Klamotten und Bücher und Stifte und viele andere tolle Sachen. Und da er momentan sehr auf Boote steht, habe ich eine Boottorte gebacken. Vegan und glutenfrei, mit einer Füllung aus Buttercreme, Apfel- und Pflaumenmarmelade zwischen den einzelnen Lagen Biskuit. Überzogen und verziert mit Fondant. Und der ist ja echt ne Bitch. Mehrere Abende habe ich mit der Gestaltung verbracht. Gegessen werden sollte er am Nachmittag, zusammen mit den Großeltern. Also nahm ich den Kuchen zum Aklimatisieren aus dem Kühlschrank bevor wir aufbrachen zum Seefahrtmuseum. Ich stellte ihn ans Fenster, damit im Luftzug die dünne Kondenswasserschicht abtrocknen konnte. Natürlich hätte ich wissen müssen, dass es anfängt zu regnen. Als wir heimkamen, war die Torte klitschnass und bot einen ziemlich traurigen Anblick.

 

And then I also have to write about Little Swede's second birthday. He got clothes and books and pens and lots of other great stuff. And because he likes boats at the moment I made a boat cake. Vegan and glutenfree, with butter cream, apple and plum jam between several layers of sponge cake. Covered and decorated with sugar paste. And that oe is really a bitch. I spend more than one evening with making this cake. We wanted to eat it in the afternoon, together with the grandparents. I took the cake out of the fridge before we left for the seafaring museum. I put it onto the window sill to let the ventilation dry the condensed water on the surface. Well - I should have known that it would start to rain... When we came home the cake looked pretty poor.

Zum Geburtstag gabs auch eine selbstgenähte Jacke. Ich hatte im Netz eine Jacke mit Fuchsdesign gesehen, die ich toll fand und ließ mich davon inspirieren. Das Endergebnis besteht aus Fleece, selbstgefärbter Baumwolle und extra bestelltem Fuchsstoff. Die Jacke hat große Taschen und einen verdeckten Reißverschluss.

 

He also got a jacket for his birthday. I saw a cute jacket on the web and let me inspire by its foxy design. The end result consists of fleece, hand-dyed cotton and ordered fox fabric. The jacket has bis pockets and a covered zipper.

Und deswegen, noch vor dem Rückblick aufs Burgtreffen, eine Patchworkidee, die mir sehr am Herzen liegt. 

Ich finde es interessant, dass die skandinavischen Flaggen alle ein ähnliches Design haben, nämlich beinhalten alle das "Kreuz des Nordens". Auch die Farben bewegen sich alle nur in einem kleinen Spektrum: weiß, gelb, blau und rot. Skandinavien bezeichnet im engeren Sinne die Länder Schweden, Norwegen und Dänemark. Auch deren Sprachen weisen enge Verbindungen auf. Dänemarks Flagge, die "Dannebrog", ist vermutlich die älteste Flagge der Welt, die immernoch im Gebrauch ist. Im weiteren Sinne zählt man auch Finnland und Island dazu. Hinzu kommen die autonomen Territorien Åland und die Färöer Inseln. Die Färöer gehören zu Dänemark, Åland zu Finnland, ist aber schwedischsprachig. Eine Ausnahme bildet noch Grönland, die größte Insel der Erde. Geologisch gehört es zu Nordamerika, ist aber ein autonomer Bestandteil von Dänemark. Grönlands Flagge beinhaltet als einzige kein Kreuz.

Ich hatte schon länger die Idee aus diesen Flaggen einen Quilt zu machen, auch wenn Herr H. das doof fand, weil er sich eher weigert sich selbst als Teil der skandinavischen Familie zu betrachten. Und das sehen seiner Meinung nach alle anderen Skandinavier auch so, weshalb ich diesen Quilt nie an einen von denen verkaufen könnte. Dann höchstens an skandinavienverrückte Deutsche.

Mir macht das aber nichts. Ich bin persönlich und von meiner eigenen Geschichte her nicht involviert in diesen Identitätskonflikt und kann einfach die Tatsache genießen, dass ich nun in Nordeuropa wohne und die Kulturen - auch wenn er das nicht hören mag - eng zusammenhängen.

And that's why I speak about a patchwork idea today that is very dear to me.
I find it very interesting that all scandinavian flags have a similar design: all of them contain the "Nordic Cross". They also just show a small variety of colors: white, yellow, blue, red. In the more narrow sense Scandinavia means Sweden, Norway and Denmark.  Also their languages are closely connected. Denmarks flag - "Dannebrog" - is probably the oldest still used flag in the world. In the broader sense Scandinavia also includes Iceland and Finland. Plus the two self-governing countries Faroe Islands and Åland, which belong to Denmark and Finland. Another exception is Greenland, the worlds biggest island. It's physiographically a part of North America, but an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Greenlands flag is the only one whose design doesn't contain a cross. 
Making a quilt from those flags was an idea I had for very long, though Herr H. just finds it stupid. He isn't willing to see himself as a part of the scandinavian family and in his opinion all the other Scandinavians think so as well. That's why he claims I could never sell this quilt to anyone of them. Maybe to Germans who are crazy about Scandinavia.
Well - I don't care. I'm personally not involved in this conflict of identity. I am able to enjoy the fact that I live where I live and that the cultures are closely related - also if he doesn't like to hear.

Vor einigen Wochen hat es mich nun gepackt und ich habe angefangen aus dieser begrenzten Farbpalette Flaggen zu nähen, jeweils 4 Exemplare pro Flagge. Dazugenommen habe ich übrigens noch die inoffizielle Flagge Västergötlands, die historische Provinz, in der wir im Moment wohnen. 

Was ich übrigens sehr interessant fand, als ich mich in der Wikipedia festlas und bis dahin nicht wusste: Werden Flaggen industriell hergestellt, passiert das meistens in einem standardisierten Seitenverhältnis, oftmals 2:3 oder 1:2. Dabei hat jede Flagge ein individuelles Verhältnis von Länge und Breite. Z.B. ist die Dannebrog fast schon quadratisch (28:37), während die Flagge Grönlands ein Seitenverhältnis von 2:3 aufweist. Ich habe in meinem Quilt diese individuellen Maße nach längerem Überlegen beibehalten, obwohl das viel mehr Rechnerei und Fummelei ist.

A few weeks ago I finally started to sew flags from those few colors, 4 flags per country. I included by the way the inofficial flag of Västergötland, the traditional province we live in right now.
What I found really interesting while I read through the Wikipedia and I didn't know until then: if flags are produced industrially it mostly happens in a standardized aspect ratio, often 2:3 or 1:2. But every flag has its very own width-to-height ratio. The Dannebrog is for example almost square (28:37), while Greenlands flag is much wider (2:3). In my quilt I kept those individual ratios, though this means much more calculating.

Nun bin ich jedenfalls mit dem Piecen der einzelnen Flaggen fertig. Das hier ist der erste Kompositionsversuch.  Die grönländische Flagge wird - nach der großartigen Idee von Lilienkind auf dem Burgtreffen :) - die Rückseite bilden.

Now I'm done with piecing the flags. This is my first try of composition. Greenlands flag will build the back of the quilt, based on the fantastic idea of Lilienkind. :)

Oktoberbaby

Ein tolles Projekt für Lieblingsstoffe aus der Restekiste.Viele dieser Stoffe liebe ich abgöttisch. Und auch Teile eines alten und nie fertig gestellten Quilttops haben endlich eine neue Bestimmung gefunden.

A great project for all your favorite fabrics in the scrap box. Many of those fabrics I adore endlessly. And also parts of an old and never finished quilt top found a new purpose.

Weder das Piecing noch das Quilten ist das beste was ich je verbrochen habe. Deswegen hatte ich es auch so lang missmutig in der Ecke vergraben. Das Muster ist denkbar anspruchslos, aber die Farben sind wunderschön und leuchten. Die Decke ist nur sparsam auf den weißen Streifen gequiltet, also bleibt alles schön fluffig.

Wether the piecing nor the quilting is the best I ever did. That's why I grumpily buried the quilt top for quite some time. It's of course the easiest of all patterns, but the colors are so wonderful and bright and glowing. I just quilted some on the white parts, so the blanket stays fluffy.

Ich packe grad hektisch die Tasche für 5 Tage Mutti allein mit Kind. Das wird ein Spaß.

Right now I panic-pack my bag for 5 days mommy and child. This will be so much fun...

Besonders fürs nus-Burgtreffen muss ich viel mitnehmen, z.B. Handnähzeug für den Werkelabend etc. Ich brauchte noch ein kleines, handliches Nadelkissen, denn mein Armnadelkissen ist zu groß. Also hab ich noch schnell aus dem Flaschenverschluss, Gummiband, Stoff, Füllwatte und Filz mit Hilfe der Klebepistole ein Fingernadelkissen zusammenschustert. :)

Auch einige andere Stücke sind in den letzten Tagen entstanden. Mein besonderer Stolz gilt dem Nähtantenarmband mit Knöpfen, Sicherheitsnadeln, Schere und Maßband und verschiedenen Kettchen und Bändern.

Especially für the nus-community meeting I have to pack such a lot, hand sewing stuff etc. I neaded a small pin cushion, cause the one I have is much too big for travelling. So I quick-cobbled together a small finger pin cushion from a bottle cap, rubber band, fabric, wadding and felt with the help of my dear glue gun. :)

I also made some other pieces the past days. The most I like my crafting bracelet with buttons, safety pins, scissor and measuring tape and different kinds of chains and bands.

Außerdem ein Eulenkettchen, eine Kette mit einem Fledermausglöckchen, das ich vor Jahren mal bei Caleidolex gekauft hab, und eine Kette mit Anhängern aus Glasperlen und Eichelkäppchen.

Last but not least an owl necklace, a necklace with a bat bell, that I bought at Caleidolex many years ago, and a necklace with charms made from glass pearls and acorn cupules.

In Malmö gab es außer Alkohol, Burgern und ner tollen Band auch Patchworkinspiration.

Besides alcohol, burgers and a great band there was also some patchwork inspiration in Malmö.

Auf dem Weg zum See radelten wir an der Werbung für eine Quiltausstellung vorbei -

On our way to the lake we passed a commercial for a quilt exhibition -

und auf dem Rückweg hatten wir genug Zeit diese zu besuchen. Die Aussteller waren eine Quiltwerkstatt in Zusammenarbeit mit einer Art Abstinenzlergruppe (Anonyme Alkoholiker oder sowas in der Art) und die Ausstellung soll das Interesse der nächsten Generation für diese alte, traditionsreiche Handarbeitstechnik begeistern. Blöd nur, dass ich mir dort wie immer fehl am Platz vorkam - nur Besuchergruppen bestehend aus antiken Damen. Keine Männer und niemand außer mir unter 60.

and on the way back we had enough time to actually visit it. The exhibitors were a quilt studio in collaboration with a kind of Alcoholics Anonymous or something like that, and the exhibition wanted to make the next generation interested in this old, traditional handicraft. Too bad I felt as wrong as always in those places - only visitor groups consisting of antique ladies. No men and no one but me under 60.

Auch wenn Blau nicht unbedingt meine Lieblingsfarbe ist - einige dieser Arbeiten sind grandios.

Though blue is not really my favorite color - some of these works are terrific.
